You might be surprised to learn that I’m not a coupon guy. Never have been. The idea of clipping a 50¢ off coupon, keeping track of it, and remembering to take it in seems like too much trouble just to save a few pennies. Also, the good folks who issue coupons usually aren’t trying to help you save on the products you normally purchase. They want you to spend money on something you wouldn’t buy in the first place.
Did you know the average consumer in America has 5.4 active credit cards? Or that the average American household owes the credit card companies $10,679? Now hear this! The consumer mentality in this country has become so whacked that being an average consumer can ruin you in a big hurry. If you don’t believe me, just look at where we are today.
In Budget 107, the expenses sheet listed the five most common transactions: Check, EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer), Online Payment, Cash, and VISA. Three of the five take money out of your checking account ASAP: Check, EFT, and Online Payment. You make the purchase at the checkout and even before they smile and thank you, your funds have been verified electronically and are on the way to being withdrawn.
What’s the quality of the shoes you’re wearing right now? What about the quality of your last haircut? What about your home? And the quality of your education? The chair you’re sitting in? Your car? Your day today? Your life??
We need to have this little discussion on quality because every purchasing decision you make will have these two components: what shall I buy, and what quality should it be? Chances are, you won’t have enough money to buy the best of everything, yet you will be able to afford better than the worst of everything. So how will you come to a decision?
